  Criteria

To be nominated, the families must meet criteria established by the participating businesses: The families must demonstrate accountability to raising their child responsibly by being actively involved in their child’s life and early childhood education and the initiative to become self-sufficient. The businesses expect each Responsible Parenting candidate to:

  • Be working or in some form of training;
  • Demonstrate the initiative to become less dependant on public assistance;
  • Demonstrate the desire to raise a child who will become a contributing member of the community; and
  • Participate in activities which have a long-tem impact on the child and the child’s future including:
    • Attend monthly parent meetings, which include parenting skills training;
    • Consistently bring their child to school, maintain an average daily attendance of 85%;
    • Complete and return weekly homework activities;
    • Attend all parent / teacher conferences; and
    • Volunteer in their child’s classroom. For parents who may be working or in school, the parent may recruit a family member or friend to volunteer in the child’s classroom

    Selection Process

The Head Start Program

Nominates families who meet the criteria set by the businesses;
Notifies the family of the nomination. Families who accept the nomination complete and return an acceptance packet.

The Participating Businesses

  • The men and women employed at the business donate their time, labor and talent to refurbish a vehicle;
  • The employees review each nominee’s acceptance packet and their level of involvement (provided by the Head Start agency).
  • The employees select the recipient, the recipient is notified; and
The participating businesses host a community-wide awards luncheon in which the parent is recognized and awarded with a newly refurbished vehicle – along with many other gifts and incentives.

    History

The Responsible Parenting Initiative began in Austin, Texas in 2002. During the first year, an Austin based collision repair shop joined Child, Incorporated to recognize a Head Start family for their commitment to responsible parenting. The business awarded the family a newly refurbished vehicle along with six months of free car insurance. Since then, businesses across the nation and Canada have shown interest in the program. In Central Texas, nine vehicles have been awarded to Head Start families in both the Austin and Houston areas. More than 40 Central Texas businesses have participated in the program with donations ranging from six months of free car insurance to car seats and gifts for the children.
